Native Americans and Colonization Essay Sample
When people think of the American story of the Indian they think Thanksgiving, the story of Thanksgiving they learned in kindergarten, with construction paper cut-outs of charters and a sense of comradeship with the Native Americans they may encounter somewhere in their lives. That sets the false pretense that the Native Americans were glad we were here and that we treated them like brothers, traded fairly with them, and respected their way of life. When really we robbed and murdered them, stole their land from underneath them and the American government didn't care. Continuing to believe the Kindergarten story of the relations between settlers and Native Americans may keep us from feeling bad but will never absolve us of our mistreatment of them.
The Native Americans see it from the perspective of people who were treated with anything but respect, the Native Americans of today are still angry and frustrated with their situation now and how we have handled our relations with them. They have never adapted to our way of life because so much of it contradicts theirs. Although some people recognize that the way we invade this country and treated the Native Americans was unfair, they feel bad for them. This condescending attitude does not do justice to the strong people they were before our infiltration of their continent. The Native Americans never wanted us here, they view the story of the frontier as an invasion of their home, but we still see it as a gloomy but inevitable result of our dominance of this continent. We can even think about tolerance at that point. (If you want to add about tolerance issue to your essay, this may be helpful: customcollegeessays.com/blog/tolerance-essay).
We entered this country with the intent to make it our own, but have never appreciated or understood what it means to be from here. We took advantage of the rich new land and bent them to our will, and still do so today. We still see the wilderness as something to be tamed or avoided, whereas Native Americans see it as their provider. The lack of respect for other people in the history of the colonization of America is appalling, and because of this we will never truly belong to this country or understand it. Because we conquered them and exploited their friendship and resources we have a sense of guilt when these facts are brought to our attention, and we resent them for being a reminder of that guilt. Luther Standing Bear is a Native American man who illustrates perfectly the feelings of natives towards the conquering of his people.
“The white man does not understand the Indian for the same reason he does not understand America. He is too far removed from its formative process. The roots of the tree of his life have not yet grasped the rock and soil. The white man is still troubled with primitive fears; he still has in his consciousness the perils of this frontier continent, some of its fastnesses no yet having yielded to his questing footsteps and inquiring eyes. He shudders still with the memory of the loss of his forefathers upon its scorching deserts and forbidding mountaintops. The man from Europe is still a foreigner and an alien. And he still hates the man who questioned his path across the continent.”
This quote reiterates that the Native Americans recognize we were wrong to take over their land and that we are offended by them for their perception our feelings. “And he still hates the man who questioned his path across the continent.” There is no other way to interoperate that statement. The Native Americans do not accept our presence here and they are still livid that we came; There was no concept of hospitability set. They feel we do not appreciate this country and never will because we are not from here. “The white man does not understand the Indian for the same reason he does not understand America.” While it may be construed that Native Americans have a sort of apathy to their situation this is false. Because of the voice in this quote is not one of indifference but of deep resentment and accusation. Native Americans are still fuming over the loss of their land and rights.
The view of the misfortunes of the Native American by settlers is that of regret that it happened but no apology. The settlers view was that if they could not hold their land for themselves it was not wrong for us to take it. Native Americans were weaker; with the European theory of survival of the fittest, they justified the mistreatment of these people. The settlers moved there style of living and values with them across from Europe with no regard for how it might affect the people living on the other side of the world. Helen Hunt Jackson criticizes the policies of the American government towards natives for not protecting them; she does not place the blame on the settlers themselves for their abuse of the natives.
